Ethics and Regulatory Specialist

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We are looking for a collaborative and detail-oriented Ethics and Regulatory Specialist to join the Research Ethics Team within Te Puna Tikitiki | Research and Innovation Office (RIO).

In this role, you will provide specialist ethics advice, support the processing of ethics applications, and work closely with researchers, Ethics Committees, Chairs, and stakeholders across the University. You will play a key role in supporting the University of Auckland Human Participant Ethics Committee (UAHPEC) and Auckland Health Research Ethics Committee (AHREC) if required, while contributing to ethics education, service improvements, and an enhanced researcher experience.

The role is based at the University of Auckland Newmarket Innovation Precinct (Newmarket Campus), with hybrid working arrangements available, subject to committee and operational requirements.

This is a Permanent full‑time, 37.5‑hour‑per‑week contract, Band: G  with a salary range of $87,000 to $107,500 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications.

Mō tō mātou rōpū | About the team

This is a high performing Human Ethics Secretariat that supports a high volume of research ethics applications from students and researchers across the University.  As part of RIO, the team plays a critical role in supporting ethical research practices and researchers.

You will join a highly collaborative and knowledgeable team comprising the Head of Research Ethics, Human Ethics Manager, Ethics and Regulatory Specialists, Ethics Advisers and Research Ethics and Regulatory Coordinators. Together, the team partners with researchers, committee members, faculty representatives and other stakeholders across the University to navigate complex and emerging ethics issues and ensure a positive researcher experience.

You are a trusted ethics advisor who enjoys working with people and helping others navigate complex information. You bring excellent judgement, strong analytical thinking and a commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes.

You are comfortable making decisions, balancing competing priorities and working collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders. Equally important is your ability to communicate clearly, provide practical guidance and build effective working relationships across the organisation.

Skills and experience that are required:

• A relevant tertiary qualification or experience in Research Ethics.
• Experience in a comparable advisory or specialist role that required understanding of research ethics and regulatory frameworks.
• Experience providing advice, guidance and support to a diverse stakeholder group.
• Experience developing procedures, guidance materials or training resources.
• Experience supporting committees, governance functions, Chairs or Board members.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Excellent organisational skills and the ability to self-manage to meet short timeframes, and competing priorities.
• Strong analytical ability, problem-solving skills, sound judgement and attention to detail.
• The ability to work collaboratively within a fast paced, busy and professional team environment.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and experience working with Ethics RM or other case management systems.
• Experience designing and implementing process improvements is desirable
• Knowledge of ethical guidelines, including Te Ara Tika Guidelines for Māori Research Ethics, would be highly advantageous
