Lecturer in Māori and Indigenous Education

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

The School of Education and Social Practice within Te Pūtahi Mātauranga | Faculty of Arts and Education is seeking a Lecturer in Māori and Indigenous Education to join Te Puna Wānanga, our Māori and Indigenous Education discipline area.

This is an opportunity to contribute to the advancement of Māori and Indigenous education through your expertise in te reo Māori, te ao Māori and initial teacher education. You will join a discipline underpinned by tikanga, te reo and mātauranga Māori, with a national and international reputation in Māori education and its connections to Indigenous education worldwide.

We are particularly interested in applicants whose expertise aligns with areas such as Māori and Indigenous language revitalisation, language education and policy, Kaupapa Māori theory, Māori-Pākehā and wider colonial-Indigenous educational relationships, or Indigenous and postcolonial studies in education.

Key responsibilities include:

• Course direction, teaching and curriculum development across te reo Māori, te ao Māori and teacher education courses.
• Developing a research agenda that supports the continued development of Te Puna Wānanga, Māori and Indigenous Education.
• Contributing to discipline, School and Faculty service, research supervision and relationships with schools, kura, whānau, hapū, iwi and wider communities.

This is a full-time (40 hours per week) permanent position (subject to continuation).

The workload split is 40% teaching, 40% research, and 20% service.

Remuneration depends on experience and achievements, and is aligned with our Academic Standards policy.

He kōrero mōu | About you

You are an emerging academic with expertise in Māori and Indigenous Education and a commitment to advancing Māori education through teaching, research and engagement. You bring knowledge of te reo me ōna tikanga and the implications and impacts of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in education, together with a commitment to supporting tauira and communities.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

• A Doctorate in Māori and/or Indigenous Education.
• Recent teaching experience, including experience in initial teacher education and professional supervision.
• Skills and knowledge in teaching te reo me ōna tikanga for initial teacher education.
• Skills and knowledge in exploring the history, implications and impacts of Te Tiriti o Waitangi in education.
• A developing research profile and the ability to contribute to the research agenda of Te Puna Wānanga, Māori and Indigenous Education.
• Strong communication, collaboration and relationship-building skills, including the ability to work with schools, kura, whānau, hapū, iwi and wider communities.

Knowledge of educational leadership theory and practice, experience in Māori language immersion settings, and fluency in te reo Māori are desirable.
